The RTC will provide free transportation on all regularly scheduled RTC transit services all day on Sunday, April 22, 2018 in support of Earth Day. Free park-and-ride locations with bus service to and from the Reno Earth Day event at Idlewild Park are also available.

“Sustainability is one of RTC’s guiding principles and increasing ridership on our public transportation system supports this initiative,” said RTC Executive Director Lee Gibson. “Taking public transportation instead of driving a car helps the earth and improves our region’s air quality.”

The Reno Earth Day event at Idlewild Park is served by RTC RIDE Route 16. Park-and-ride bus locations are at Washoe County’s Court Street parking lot, located at the intersection of Court Street and Virginia Street, and at McQueen High School and Clayton Middle School. Buses will run approximately every 20-30 minutes from 10:30 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. For all transportation options, visit RenoEarthDay.org.

Event attendees who use alternative transportation options, including riding the bus, signing up for RTC’s Trip Match or using the on-site Bike Valet/Parking will receive one free ticket for raffle prizes from Reno Earth Day event organizers.

There are a variety of benefits to taking public transportation. For example, if you take a bus, you help reduce greenhouse gas emissions into our environment, which helps promote better air quality in the Truckee Meadows. In addition, public transportation can ease traffic, reduce congestion, save energy and fuel. Studies show that traveling by public transportation is 10 times safer per mile than traveling by car.

The RTC is committed to improving sustainability across the agency and throughout our community. Since 2010 the RTC has reduced total facility energy use by 25%, reduced the criteria air pollutants per unlinked passenger trip by 13.1%, and increased our recycling rate to approximately 33%. In July 2017, the RTC Board formally adopted its award-winning RTC Sustainability Plan as the guiding document on the future of sustainability for the agency. This plan to identifies the existing transportation and operational sustainability measures undertaken by the RTC and establishes goals to continue to reduce fuel consumption, improve air quality, and further minimize the carbon footprint of RTC operational activities.
